Tooth Extraction, Bone Preservation & Surgical Care

When a tooth is severely damaged, infected, or cannot be restored, removal may be necessary to protect your oral health. Modern dentistry allows us not only to safely remove compromised teeth, but also to preserve and rebuild the supporting bone so future tooth replacement options remain predictable and long-lasting.

Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction involves carefully removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Whenever possible, Dr. Ryan Whelen will first explore restorative options such as fillings, crowns, or other treatments to save the tooth. However, if a tooth is too damaged by decay, fracture, or infection to be repaired, extraction may be the healthiest solution.

Most extractions are performed comfortably in-office. For more complex cases, Dr. Whelen often uses advanced surgical technology such as the Piezo Cube, which allows for precise, minimally invasive bone removal while protecting surrounding soft tissue. This approach can improve accuracy, reduce trauma, and promote smoother healing.

Patients with especially complex extractions or certain medical considerations may be referred to a trusted oral surgeon to ensure the highest level of safety and care.

Bone Grafting & Membrane Placement

After a tooth is removed, the jawbone in that area can begin to shrink over time. To preserve bone structure and support future restorations, bone grafting may be recommended at the time of extraction or as a separate procedure. Bone graft material encourages natural bone regeneration and helps maintain the shape and strength of the jaw.

A protective membrane is typically placed over the grafted area to guide proper healing. This membrane protects the graft and prevents surrounding soft tissue from interfering with bone formation, improving predictability and long-term success.

Restorative Options: Dental Implants & Bridges

Once healing is complete—or in some cases during the same procedure—restorative treatment can begin:

  • Dental Implants - Dental implants replace missing tooth roots and are anchored directly into the jawbone. When combined with proper bone support, implants provide a stable, natural-looking, and long-lasting solution. Bone grafting and membrane placement help ensure implants are placed in strong, healthy bone.

  • Dental Bridges - Dental bridges replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent teeth or implants. Even when a bridge is selected instead of an implant, bone preservation may still be recommended to maintain jaw structure and long-term oral health.

Personalized, Predictable Care

Dr. Whelen takes a conservative, patient-centered approach to both surgical and restorative dentistry. Each treatment plan is carefully tailored based on your oral health, medical history, and long-term goals—whether that includes tooth extraction, bone grafting, implant placement, or bridge restoration.
