Dental Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are permanent replacements for missing tooth roots. A small medical-grade titanium post is placed into the bone, where it integrates naturally with the bone to create a strong, stable foundation for a replacement tooth or teeth while helping preserve the bone height and width. Implant restorations are custom-made to look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer many advantages over traditional tooth replacement options, including:

  • Natural appearance and feel – Implants are designed to blend seamlessly with your smile and become a permanent part of your mouth

  • Improved speech – Unlike loose dentures, implants remain secure, allowing you to speak clearly and confidently

  • Greater comfort – Because implants are fixed in place, they eliminate the discomfort associated with removable dentures

  • Easier chewing – Implants function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods without slipping or pain

  • Improved confidence – A complete, secure smile can significantly boost self-esteem

  • Better oral health – Implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, preserving more of your natural tooth structure

  • Long-lasting durability – With proper care, dental implants can last many years—and often a lifetime

  • Convenience – Implants eliminate the need for removable dentures and messy adhesives and also allow for easily flossing when compared to dental bridges

How Successful Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have an excellent success rate—often up to 98%—depending on placement and individual health factors. With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, implants are a highly predictable, long-term solution for missing teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most patients who are healthy enough for routine dental procedures can be considered for dental implants. Ideal candidates have healthy gums, adequate bone to support the implant, and a commitment to good oral hygiene. Certain conditions—such as uncontrolled medical issues or smoking—may require additional evaluation. Dr. Whelen will carefully assess your individual needs to determine if implants are right for you.

The Dental Implant Process

Your implant journey begins with a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for you. Dr. Whelen evaluates your oral health, bone structure, and restorative goals to determine the best implant solution with a 3-Demintional X-ray.

The implant itself is placed into the bone at the site of the missing tooth. Over the next several weeks, the bone heals and bonds to the implant in a process called osseointegration, creating a strong foundation.

Once healing is complete, a connector piece called an abutment is placed on the implant. Impressions are then taken to design a custom restoration that matches your natural teeth. The final crown, bridge, or denture is securely attached, restoring full function and appearance.

Is Implant Treatment Painful?

Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after implant placement. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and post-treatment soreness is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain medication. Many patients find the process more comfortable than a tooth extraction.

Caring for Dental Implants

Dental implants are cared for just like natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular professional cleanings and exams, are essential to maintaining the health and longevity of your implants. Dr. Whelen always recommends adding a water-flosser to your oral care routine for patients with dental implants.
