Dr. Whelen was born and raised in the Piedmont area of North Carolina, where his appreciation for the outdoors and an active lifestyle began. After moving to Florida during high school, he attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Microbiology. He then went on to complete his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale.

 

Throughout his career, Dr. Whelen has made continuing education a top priority to ensure his patients receive the most advanced and comfortable care available. He has completed

advanced training in surgical extractions, platelet-rich fibrin therapy, bone grafting

techniques, full mouth rehabilitations, and implant surgery. He also graduated from the Digital Smile Design Residency with Dr. Christian Coachman and is a member of the renowned Spear Academy.

 

Dr. Whelen has completed over 300 hours of education in implant dentistry under Dr. Jack Piermatti and Dr. Shanker Iyer through the American Academy of Implant Dentistry MaxiCourse. He furthered this rigorous training in São Paulo, Brazil, where he performed hospital-based, complex implant surgeries under the guidance of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Furthermore, he is a licensed provider for LANAP® (“laser gum surgery”), an advanced alternative to traditional techniques for treating gum and bone disease. Most recently, Dr. Whelen completed advanced training in cosmetic dentistry under the guidance of Dr. David Hornbrook, one of the leading educators in functional and aesthetic dentistry. He then worked with Dr. David Montgomery studying occlusion, TMJ and myofascial pain. He is also a certified Invisalign® provider.

 

Outside the office, Dr. Whelen is an avid runner, adventurous skier, and amateur mountain

biker with a passion for travel. He is a lifelong hockey fan and history enthusiast who enjoys

time at the beach with a good book or at home practicing guitar. Most notably, Dr. Whelen

loves spending time with his Great Dane, Ovi.
