Dental Crowns & Bridges
Dental crowns and bridges are fixed restorations designed to repair damaged teeth or replace missing ones. A crown is used to fully cover and protect a weakened or damaged tooth, or to restore a dental implant. A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by filling the space and anchoring to the surrounding natural teeth or implants. Both crowns and bridges are permanently cemented in place and restore function, comfort, and appearance.
Benefits of Crowns & Bridges
In addition to strengthening damaged teeth, crowns and bridges can improve the appearance, shape, alignment, and bite of your smile. When a tooth is missing, surrounding teeth can shift out of position, leading to bite problems and additional dental issues. Crowns and bridges help maintain proper alignment and prevent these complications.
How Dental Crowns Work
A dental crown fully covers a tooth to restore its strength and appearance. Crowns may also be placed on dental implants to function and look like natural teeth. Modern crowns are commonly made from porcelain or ceramic materials that can be carefully matched to your natural tooth color. In some cases, stronger materials such as metal alloys may be recommended for back teeth where chewing forces are greater.
Dr. Whelen may recommend a dental crown to:
-
Restore a tooth with a large filling
-
Protect a weak or cracked tooth
-
Repair a fractured or worn tooth
-
Support a dental bridge
-
Restore a dental implant
-
Improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth
-
Protect a tooth following root canal treatment
How Dental Bridges Work
Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Leaving gaps untreated can cause surrounding teeth to shift, leading to bite problems, gum disease, or jaw discomfort. A bridge “spans” the missing space and is supported by neighboring teeth or implants, which act as anchors. The replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to crowns placed on these supporting teeth.

Bridges can be made from several materials, including porcelain or ceramic, which are designed to blend naturally with your smile. Dr. Whelen will help you choose the best option based on function, aesthetics, and long-term durability.
The Crowns & Bridges Process
To prepare for a crown or bridge, the supporting tooth or teeth are gently reshaped so the restoration fits securely and comfortably. A digital impression is then taken to create a precise custom restoration. If porcelain or ceramic is used, the shade is carefully selected to match your natural teeth.

While your permanent crown or bridge is being created by a dental laboratory, a temporary restoration is placed to protect the prepared teeth. Once complete, the final crown or bridge is securely cemented into place.
How Long Do Crowns & Bridges Last?
With proper care, dental crowns and bridges can last many years and often decades. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss every day, and visit our office regularly for exams and professional cleanings. Keeping your gums and supporting teeth healthy helps ensure the long-term success of your restoration.
