Cosmetic Fillings / Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a cosmetic and restorative procedure that uses a tooth-colored composite resin to repair and enhance teeth. Bonding can be used to fix chipped, cracked, or decayed teeth, improve discoloration, close small gaps, or reshape teeth to create a more balanced smile. In many cases, dental bonding can be completed in just one visit.
Benefits of Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is one of the simplest and most affordable cosmetic dental treatments available. The composite resin is carefully shaped and polished to blend naturally with surrounding teeth, making it an excellent option for subtle smile improvements. Bonding is commonly used to:
-
Repair chipped or cracked teeth
-
Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
-
Close small spaces between teeth
-
Make teeth appear longer or more symmetrical
-
Serve as a cosmetic alternative to metal fillings
-
Protect exposed tooth roots caused by gum recession
Caring for Bonded Teeth
The resin material used in bonding can stain over time. To minimize staining, avoid dark-colored foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco, especially during the first 48 hours after treatment. Maintaining good oral hygiene—brushing regularly, flossing daily, and visiting our office every six months for professional cleanings—will help keep your bonded teeth looking their best.
The Dental Bonding Procedure
Your treatment begins with a consultation, where Dr. Whelen will discuss your goals and evaluate whether bonding is the right option for you. A shade guide is used to select a composite resin that closely matches the natural color of your teeth.

The tooth surface is gently prepared to remove tooth decay (cavities) and to help the bonding material adhere securely. The tooth-colored resin is then applied, shaped, and smoothed to achieve the desired appearance. Once properly shaped, the material is hardened using a specialized curing light. Afterward, the bonded area is carefully refined and polished to match the look and feel of your natural teeth.

Dental bonding typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth and is often completed in a single appointment. If multiple teeth are being treated, additional time or visits may be recommended.
